288 Route Detailed DirectionsGeorge Observatory Background Information | Directions/Maps Main Page Once you pass Beltway 8 you'll drive about 16 miles until you get to the Alvin/Rosharon exit. At the Alvin/Rosharon (FM 1462) exit, you'll see a big brown sign indicating the exit is for Brazos Bend State Park. Once you exit, you'll see some blinking lights at the intersection of the 288 feeder and the FM 1462 underpass. Turn right (west) onto FM 1462. Once you're on FM 1462 you'll pass a U.S. Post Office on the left. Shortly after that, the road will curve to the right. Around the curve is a traffic light, at the intersection of FM 1462 and FM 521. Just cross FM 521 and continue on FM 1462. (There's another big brown sign across FM 521 telling you to go straight ahead to Brazos Bend State Park.) After driving approximately 6.8 miles you'll cross the Brazos River. About 2 ½ miles after that you'll see some blinking yellow lights. Drive through those lights. Then, about a mile, or so down the road you’ll see another set of blinking yellow lights, where there is a "T" in the road. There are two country stores/gas stations on either side of the T, both of which are on the right-hand side of FM 1462. This is the intersection of FM 1462 and FM 762. (See map below.) Turn right at the blinking yellow lights onto FM 762. You'll drive about 1.2 miles down FM 762 (past a church on the right). The entrance to the park is on the right. (Slow down: it’s easy to miss the entrance!)
Directions from the Park Entrance to the Observatory It’s about a 2 ½ to 3 mile drive from the park entrance to the observatory’s parking lot. Just drive along the path highlighted in yellow on the park map I have created*. (For the sake of wildlife – and humans, too! – please observe the 30 MPH speed limit!) The observatory’s parking lot is on the left-hand side. (The parking lot is highlighted in green on the map.) Then, just take the footpath (across Creekfield Lake) to the observatory, marked with a red “X” on the map. The observatory’s gift shop (where you buy the tickets to
use the big telescope) is located downstairs. (These tickets usually
go on sale at 5:00 p.m. and sell out quickly.)
* Note: The park map I have "created" is actually a modified version of the park maps provided to visitors when they enter the park. I recommend visitors obtain one of these official maps.
