Southwest Freeway Route Detailed Directions

George Observatory Background Information | Directions/Maps Main Page

NOTE: This route has many twists and turns.

  • Go south on the Southwest Freeway and pass Beltway 8.
  • 9.3 miles past Beltway 8 you will cross the Brazos River.
  • Look for, and take the Crabb River Road exit (about 0.7 miles from the Brazos River).
  • Turn left under the freeway, and go straight (south) on Crabb River Road.
  • 1.6 miles later you will cross railroad tracks
  • 6.9 miles later you should see the “Brazos Lakes Subdivision” on your left. This will reassure you that you are not lost!
  • 1.7 miles later (or, if you will, 8.6 miles after the railroad tracks) you will see some blinking yellow lights. Turn left here.
  • Drive about 5.6 miles and look for signs for “Park Road 72.”
  • Brazos Bend State Park will be on your left.
  • If you drive to a set of blinking red lights at a dead end where:
    • there is a "T" in the road (where FM 762 and FM 1462 intersect), and
    • there are two country stores/gas stations on either side of the T,
    • then you’ve gone too far! Turn around and drive about a mile back down FM 762 (past a church). The park will be on your right.

Directions from the Park Entrance to the Observatory

It’s about a 2 ½ to 3 mile drive from the park entrance to the observatory’s parking lot. Just drive along the path highlighted in yellow on the park map I have created*. (For the sake of wildlife – and humans, too! – please observe the 30 MPH speed limit!) The observatory’s parking lot is on the left-hand side. (The parking lot is highlighted in green on the map.)

Then, just take the footpath (across Creekfield Lake) to the observatory, marked with a red “X" on the map.

The observatory’s gift shop (where you buy the tickets to use the big telescope) is located downstairs. (These tickets usually go on sale at 5:00 p.m. and sell out quickly.)

* Note: The park map I have "created" is actually a modified version of the park maps provided to visitors when they enter the park. I recommend visitors obtain one of these official maps.
